Sharon Inouye, MD, MPH, recently published an article in the Annals of Internal Medicine titled, “Enhancing Cognitive Aging: Clinical Highlights of a Report from the Institute of Medicine,” that highlights the key aspects of an Institute of Medicine report that made recommendations for prevention and intervention opportunities, the education of health care professionals, and the enhancement of public awareness.

"With the aging of our population, cognitive aging has emerged as a leading public health concern." Despite an AARP survey that indicated that 93 percent of respondents identified maintaining brain health as a top priority, "A substantial void exists in the fundamental understanding of the cognitive aging process and its distinction from Alzheimer disease and related dementias," wrote Dr. Inouye.

Dr. Inouye developed the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), a comprehensive patient-care program that ensures optimal care for older adults in the hospital and prevents delirium (a sudden state of confusion or change in mental state) and loss of functioning. HELP is supported by a two-year grant by the John A. Hartford Foundation.
