Hospital emergency departments have been challenged by a variety of factors, including the impact of healthcare reform, increasing number of people living with mulitple chronic conditions, and a rapidly growing aging population. Compared to the 45 Geriatric Emergency Departments (GEDs) in the country in 2007, "Today, we believe there are over 100, and momentum is underway. It is very promising," Dr. Fulmer said.
