National Dialogue Picks Up Around Palliative Care

Since the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the report "Dying in America: Improving Quality and Honoring Individual Preferences Near the End of Life" with findings and recommendation regarding palliative care, the national media has extensively covered the dialogue revolving around supporting practice and policy solutions for seriously ill people and their families. Hartford grantee and Director of the Center to Advance Palliatice Care (CAPC) Diane E. Meier, who served on the committee appointed by the Institute of Medicine to create the report, has since been featured in various interviews and publications speaking about palliative care.

The first article from The Wall Street Journal entitled, "Straight Talk About Palliative Care: What Everyone Should Know," details a conversation with Dr. Meier on the topic of overcoming barriers and ensuring the spread of palliative care across the country. Along with workforce training, the article underscores that the public needs to be armed with good information about what palliative care is and where they can find it.

In another interview, "Have We Overlooked Palliative Care as an Answer to a Patient’s Suffering?", Dr. Meier spoke with Arthur Caplan regarding palliative care access and training, as well as, ethical and social policy questions in the field. This interview is available to view at Medscape with sign-up for a free account.

Dr. Meier was also interviewed for The New York Times article, "Panel Urges Overhauling Health Care at End of Life," as well as The Wall Street Journal article, "End-of-Life Care in U.S. Is Lacking, Report Says." A radio interview with her on this topic is also available from the public radio program, The Takeaway. CAPC is also hosting a free conference, “Leveraging the New IOM Report” on October 28th to discuss the report with constituents. You can register here for the event.
