Members of House of Representatives Sign Letter in Support of Older Adults and Their Caregivers

Twenty-six members of the House of Representatives has signed a letter to the House Chair and Ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies in support of adequate funding in fiscal year 2015 for programs that will increase the number of health care professional who are prepared to care for the older adult population and support family caregivers.

Twenty-six members of the House of Representatives has signed a letter to the House Chair and Ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies in support of adequate funding in fiscal year 2015 for programs that will increase the number of health care professional who are prepared to care for the older adult population and support family caregivers.

With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, there will be 70 million Americans over age 65 by the year 2030. The current health care workforce will not be capable of meeting the demand of this growing population and its needs.

The letter, which supports a total of $44.7 million in funding for geriatrics education program and $172.9 million in funding for programs that support family caregivers, was circulated by Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and Congresswoman Doris Matsui of California in consideration of the FY2015 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill.
