Congratulations and welcome to the 2013 Jahnigen and Williams Scholars and all other recepients of the National Institute on Aging GEMSSTAR awards. The federal Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists' Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) program provides financial and career development support targeted to physician faculty who have recently completed their clinical training in any medical or surgical specialty and are embarking on a career in clinical aging research in their specialty area. Matching funds are required and two programs, the Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Awards and the T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program support the leadership development of several GEMSSTAR recepients, including seven scholars this year. The Williams and Jahnigen Scholars programs are supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation, The Atlantic Philanthropies, and several partnering professional specialty societies.
