National Center on Gerontological Social Work Excellence

Grant Summary

Since 1998, the Hartford Foundation has supported social work education through a variety of programs under the umbrella of the Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI). This grant will provide a final three years of funding to the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), which has served as the GSWI Coordinating Center for 13 years. As the National Center for Gerontological Social Work Excellence, GSA will build on successes in three program areas: (1) continuing the collaboration with the Veterans Administration (VA) to develop social work research leaders who will help advance evidence-based knowledge related to VA practice in aging, (2) mobilizing the current alumni network to use their expertise and make an impact on practice and policy, and (3) strengthening five schools of social work that will sustain the Geriatric Social Work Initiative’s accomplishments and work with community agencies to develop effective ways to incorporate new knowledge and models into practice and policy.
