Establishing a Geriatrics Workforce Policy Studies Center to Support Advocacy for Improved Geriatric

Grant Summary

The John A. Hartford Foundation has awarded a grant to the American Geriatrics Society to establish a Geriatrics Workforce Policy Studies Center to serve as a source of data and communications in support of policy and advocacy efforts to expand the geriatrics health care workforce. Specifically, grant funding will be used to integrate primary data collected over the last eight years through the Status of Geriatrics Workforce Study with secondary data collected by current and future partners to generate reports and other data-driven communications about the geriatrics workforce in support of policy changes to improve the health care of older adults. The data and reports created by Co-Investigators Gregg A. Warshaw MD, and Libbie Bragg, RN, PhD, and other researchers at the University of Cincinnati will be used by the American Geriatrics Society and its affiliate, the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs, to support policy and communications efforts that may include such objectives as increasing federal funding for geriatrics educators and fellows through Titles VII and VIII, increasing training of medical students in geriatrics core competencies, and providing analysis about Medicare Graduate Medical Education funding allocations. Information about the Status of Geriatrics Workforce Study can be found at www.adgapstudy.uc.edu.
