Gavin W. Hougham, Director of Research at the University of Chicago Section of Geriatrics, Named Senior Program Officer
Corinne H. Rieder, Hartford Foundation executive director and treasurer, today announced the appointment of Gavin W. Hougham, PhD, to the position of senior program officer at The John A. Hartford Foundation.
Dr. Hougham has been the director of research in the section of geriatrics at the University of Chicago 's Department of Medicine since 1991. In this position, he has designed and directed research projects, trained and supervised research staff, analyzed survey data, and prepared grant proposals and scientific papers for publication. He has also served as research coordinator for a Hartford-funded grant to support the development of fellows and junior faculty for academic careers in geriatrics. Among his many activities in the areas of teaching and training, Dr. Hougham has been a public health advisor, adjunct instructor, and research mentor to more than 100 students, fellows, and research staff.
His research projects have included studies of dementia, research ethics, nursing homes, patient self-determination and cross-cultural (Japanese) gerontology. He is an expert in the area of aging and has authored or co-authored articles and abstracts in journals such as the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, The Gerontologist, Annals of Long-Term Care, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Clinical Research, and Neurology. He is a member of six professional societies and received, along with three colleagues, the President's Award for the best ethics paper at the 2004 Annual Meeting of the American Geriatrics Society.
Dr. Hougham earned his BS degree at the State University of New York, College at Brockport, and his MA and PhD at the University of Chicago , Department of Sociology. He will start in his new position at the Foundation this summer. |
