Roadmap for Patient and Family Engagement in Healthcare Practice and Research

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation engaged the American Institutes for Research and an eight-member steering group of healthcare leaders to bring together a diverse group of individuals and organizations with broad experience in healthcare, and patient and family engagement specifically, to create a unified vision for how we meaningfully engage patients and their families in the delivery of care. This group included patients, advocates, clinicians, researchers, payers, funders and policy makers. The result is a Roadmap for Patient and Family Engagement in Healthcare Practice and Research.

The roadmap includes specific actions that can be taken today to partner with patients and their families to improve how care is delivered, including partnership in the organizational design, governance and policy making for healthcare. It is informed by the knowledge and evidence of over 70 individuals and approximately 60 organizations.

The roadmap is a call to action for anyone interested in advancing work related to patient and family engagement. It includes:

  • A vision for patient and family engagement in healthcare.
  • 8 change strategies to drive action towards increased patient and family engagement.
  • 5 simple actions that different stakeholder groups can begin today.
