Geriatrics Provider Advocates Pen Opinion Piece in Providence Journal on Dual Eligibles

Hartford grantee Dr. Richard W. Besdine recently co-authored an op-ed piece with Martha Watson and Maureen Maigret in the Providence Journal on how the development of Integrated Care Initiative (ICI) demonstration projects can help better serve the needs of Rhode Islanders by addressing the frustrating bureaucratic tangle for vulnerable Medicare/Medicaid dual eligible individuals. Besdine, Watson, and Maigret are supported through a John A. Hartford Foundation grant to Community Catalyst for advocacy on behalf of the older dual-eligible population.

"Under our current system, with two different service and billing programs to navigate, these people often find themselves in a frustrating bureaucratic tangle when trying to get the services they need. As a result, they tend to bounce in and out of emergency rooms, hospitals and nursing homes, often experiencing uncoordinated care and preventable and costly complications. With the recent announcement that the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), an important new effort to improve care for older Rhode Islanders is one step closer to reality."
