Aging and Care of Older Adults Included in NAM Effort to Inform the Next Presidential Administration
What’s next for U.S. health policy? As we look ahead to a new presidential administration, we face not only daunting challenges, but tremendous opportunities. To inform debate and decision making at this critical juncture, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) launched the Vital Directions for Health and Health Care initiative.
Guided by an 18-member steering committee, the NAM commissioned expert papers on 19 priority focus areas for U.S. health policy, to be posted in prepublication form on Monday, September 19. Together, these papers represent the guidance of more than 100 leading researchers, scientists, and policy makers from across the United States.
The NAM will host a national public symposium on September 26 to communicate the findings of the 19 papers and collect stakeholder feedback to help inform a final synthesis paper to be published in late 2016.
In parallel, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a series of viewpoints presenting highlights from each of the 19 papers. Dr. Terry Fulmer co-authored two of these papers in JAMA: "Preparing for Better Health and Health Care for an Aging Population" and "Tailoring Complex Care Management, Coordination, and Integration for High-Need, High-Cost Patients."
