The American College of Cardiology has released the Essentials of Cardiovascular Care in Older Adults (ECCOA), a free online self-assessment curriculum designed for cardiovascular specialists and other clinicians who care for older patients with cardiovascular disease (continuing education credits are available for physicians and nurses). The curriculum was designed to teach practitioners key features of aging that directly impact cardiovascular disease (CVD) to improve care and quality of life in this growing segment of the cardiovascular patients.

Using a case-based format, this curriculum highlights important aging-related changes which affect cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology, resulting in age-related differences in the prevention, presentation, and management of CVD in older adults. Important concepts of caring for older patients are also introduced in the setting of CVD, including polypharmacy, multiple chronic conditions, lack of applicable data, and promotes patient-centered care focused on maintaining and/or improving quality, rather than length, of life and preserving function, cognition and independence. The curriculum, developed with funding from a John A. Hartford Foundation grant, can be accessed at www.cardiosource.org/ECCOA.
