National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence Coordinating Center Renewal

Grant Summary

For more than 12 years the Hartford Foundation has supported significant faculty development and curricular change in the nation's schools of nursing. As part of this effort, 255 Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity awards have been granted: 153 pre-doctoral Hartford Scholarships, 98 post-doctoral Claire M. Fagin Fellowships, and four master's of business administration scholarships. BAGNC nurses have taught more than 33,000 students, received over $106 million in additional research funding, and published over 1,700 articles on the care of older adults. This final renewal from the Foundation will establish the National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence program, consisting of a coordinating center (housed at the Gerontological Society of America) and eight individual centers of geriatric nursing excellence (CGNE). The overall purpose of the National Hartford Centers program is to develop capacity to ensure a workforce to improve the health, quality of life, and health care of our aging population. To do this, the National Hartford Centers aim to: (1) grow the number of new doctorally prepared gero-expert nursing faculty, (2) retool existing nursing faculty to be gero-competent to teach nursing students to care for older adults, and (3) leverage funding to support activities of the National Centers and promote long-term sustainability. This constellation of transition grants will enable the coordinating center and CGNEs to consolidate their successes; wind down their scholarship programs, further develop their connections to alumni; and begin new activities with the potential to sustain the initiative after Foundation support is complete.
