Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP): Taking to Scale

Grant Summary

This two-year grant will support the dissemination of the evidence-based delirium prevention and management Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP). Delirium is a common adverse occurrence among hospitalized older adults and is associated with longer hospital stays, higher costs of care, and other poor outcomes for patients, including death. HELP was developed by Sharon Inouye, MD, and has been proven effective and cost-effective in numerous rigorous studies. This project will invest in the capacity of the HELP program, now based at Harvard University-affiliated Hebrew SeniorLife, to train new hospitals and facilitate adoption of the model. Through on-line education and train-the-trainer approaches, the project will enable the program to meet the needs of the growing audience being created by health reform.
