MEDICINE

Advanced Fellowship Training in Medicine:

Paul B. Beeson Career Development Awards in Aging Research Program

The Beeson program, administered by the American Federation on Aging Research (AFAR) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), funded by the National Institute on Aging, Atlantic Philanthropies, the John A. Hartford Foundation, and Starr Foundation, fosters the independent research careers of clinically trained investigators to enhance the health and quality of life of older Americans. Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Awards

The Jahnigen Scholars program, supported by the Hartford Foundation and Atlantic Philanthropies and administered by the American Geriatrics Society, offers two-year career development awards to support junior faculty in the specialties of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology. The award is intended to allow individuals to initiate and ultimately sustain a career in research and education in the geriatrics aspects of their discipline. T. Franklin Williams Scholars Award

The T. Franklin Williams Scholars Award is given to a junior faculty geriatrician who is conducting research in collaboration with a sub-specialist of internal medicine on a health problem of older patients. The award is intended to support the academic career development of a promising physician-scientist.  The T. Franklin Williams Scholars Award is offered by the AGS Foundation for Health in Aging in collaboration with the Association for Subspecialty Professors and is supported by grants from the Atlantic Philanthropies and the John A. Hartford Geriatrics Health Outcomes Research Scholars Awards Program This program, sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation and the AGS Foundation for Health in Aging, supports physician-scientists committed to improving the health care of older adults during the critical transition from junior faculty to independent researcher. American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Awards

The Hartford Foundation has provided funding to help advance the field of geriatric oncology, with a grant to American Society of Clinical Oncology to administer the Young Investigator Award. This grant provides funding to promising investigators to encourage and promote quality research in clinical oncology by funding physicians during the transition from a fellowship program to a faculty appointment. Medical Student Training:

Medical Student Summer Research Training in Aging Program

Administered by the American Federation of Aging Research and the National Institute on Aging, funded by The National Institute on Aging, The John A. Hartford Foundation, The William Randolph Hearst Foundation, The Cleveland Foundation, the Cardinal Health Foundation, the Lillian R. Gleitsman Foundation, and an anonymous donor, this program encourages medical students, particularly budding researchers, to consider a career in academic geriatrics by awarding short-term scholarships. NURSING

The John A. Hartford Foundation is preparing professional nurses to play leadership roles in improving the health of older adults through scholarships and fellowships that support education of geriatric advanced practice nurses, nursing faculty and nursing researchers.

Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarships:

Creating Careers in Geriatric Advanced Practice Nursing
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) received a grant from The John A. Hartford Foundation of New York to promote career opportunities in geriatric advanced practice nursing by providing scholarship monies to schools of nursing with geriatric advanced practice nursing programs to expand their student base. The project also provides for networking, mentorship, role modeling, and leadership activities between scholarship awardees and experts in geriatric nursing. SOCIAL WORK

The John A. Hartford Foundation offers social work scholarships and fellowships, administered by The Gerontological Society of America (GSA). This program addresses the lack of adequately trained social work practitioners to meet the social and health care needs of today and tomorrow's rapidly increasing aging population.
