All the knowledge in the world is useless if no one can find it. One of the best places to look for knowledge about geriatrics is the Portal of Geriatric Online Education, best known as POGOe. With more than 740 products on a wide array of topics in geriatric education, POGOe is a tremendous resource for students and clinicians. There are nearly 9,000 registered users on POGOe. If you aren’t already one of them, please join (registration is free).

Of course, we don’t just want you just to use POGOe—we want you to add to it. How, you might ask? To answer that question—and any others you might have about POGOe—with the helpful support of the Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative (HGNI), I have created a frequently asked questions guide to POGOe called “Getting Started on POGOe.”

The guide includes some background on POGOe, an overview of the resources available, and step-by-step instructions for submitting your own resources to the site. The site has already grown exponentially. Created in 2004 as a way for Donald W. Reynolds grantees to share geriatric medical educational materials with geriatrics educators and physicians, POGOe underwent a major expansion in 2010 when it partnered with the HGNI to add geriatric nursing educational materials to the
POGOe repository. Now, the Hartford Geropsychiatric Nursing Collaborative’s curriculum materials are the most popular products on the site, with over 10,000 views.

Even the federal government is on to the great geriatric educational resources our Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing and our Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence have created to date. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) specifically mentioned both in this February 2012 call for proposals for schools of nursing to provide geriatrics education and training. Where’s the perfect place to house all these resources? On POGOe, of course!

So, please take a look at “Getting Started on POGOe” and help us continue POGOe’s expansion. Don’t miss an opportunity to make your materials available to the gero community!
